Cruise Industry on Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is one of the world's best nature-based destinations. Sometimes called ‘South Australia's Galapagos’, Kangaroo Island is stunning, rugged, and wild, with abundant native wildlife. The 4,400 square kilometre island is Australia’s third-largest, with over 540 kilometres of spectacular coastline. At 155 kilometres long and 55 kilometres across its widest point, ‘KI’, as it is known to locals, is six times larger than Singapore—but with a tiny fraction of its population.
The Island's natural attractions include the well-known Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch at Flinders Chase National Park, and Seal Bay , but also magnificent beaches, soaring cliffs, unspoiled bushland and coastal dune systems. The wildlife and plant life on the island include species found nowhere else on earth and birds migrate here from the other side of the world.
The Island has a range of cellar doors, breweries and distilleries with great wines, craft beers and spirits with spectacular views and delicious local produce. Agricultural industries form the backbone of the Islands economy, and this can be experienced through aquaculture, apiary, wool, and eucalyptus industries, with locals telling their stories.
All these treasures are spread over eight diverse and intriguing Kangaroo Island regions. Whilst cruise visitors only have a day to explore the Island, it is important to ensure that they book a tour, or hire a car to get the most out of their stay. Passengers are encouraged to pre-book any tour or car hire. There is no public bus service, taxis, or Uber on Kangaroo Island. If passengers are not on a tour or have hired a car, they will be limited to being in Penneshaw on foot.
what to expect when arriving to Penneshaw
Penneshaw anchorage and wharf
Kangaroo Island is a very popular cruise destination in Australia. The transit port call is at Penneshaw, located on the easternmost coastline off the Island. Cruise ships can tender passengers ashore from the anchorage, where there is a double tender landing platform available at the Penneshaw Wharf. There is easy walking access to the undercover tour dispatch area located adjacent to the wharf, and a 500-metre walk into the nearby township.
Welcome Program
The local industry provides a Welcome Program for passengers arriving to Penneshaw. Volunteers assist passengers with directions out of the wharf and terminal area alongside staff from SeaLink, who operate the daily ferry service. Information and guidance is provided to passengers depending on their needs. Information is provided in a handout; the latest version can be found below.
Passengers can walk from the wharf to the town, which is approximately 500 meters. A free shuttle bus is provided for ships with more than 1,000 passengers, providing access to the township for people with mobility issues.
For ships over 1,000 people there will be a Market on the town oval, showcasing some of the island's artisan producers. The town has a Pub, various cafes, retail outlets, an IGA, a chemist, and a Post Office. Penneshaw is brilliant for walking, with various trails including the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, within 5 minutes from the town centre, and Baudin Conservation Park for those that really need to stretch their legs. We encourage passengers to speak with volunteers about where to spot our wildlife, which can be tailored to the guests' needs.
