cruise ship impact project

As members may be aware there has been considerable community and industry commentary and in some circumstance, concern, about the impacts of cruise ship visitation on Kangaroo Island. Noting the islands appeal as a destination, the number of cruise ships visiting KI was very likely to continue to grow, particularly given the SATCs strategy to increase cruise ship visitation to South Australia generally.

Accordingly Tourism Kangaroo Island (TKI) initiated a project to collect local community, industry and key stakeholder feedback on their cruise season experiences, lessons learnt, challenges and opportunities.  With the amalgamation of TKI and KIFWA the project has now been finalised by the newly formed Kangaroo Island Tourism Food Wine and Beverage Association (KITFWBA).

The aim of the project was to develop a comprehensive report which could be used as a basis for informed decision making impacting on the future management of cruise ship visitation and determination of sustainable cruise ship visitation growth.

Jeanette Gellard of Innovative Influences was engaged to conduct the study and provide a report based on the collection of data via online survey, community forums and engagement with agencies such as Council, DEW and the SATC.
