Kangaroo Island's  'go electric iNitative'

Need a hire car to tour around Australia's third largest island? What better way to do a great South Aussie road trip than rent a big all-wheel-drive vehicle with a tiny environmental footprint!

We're not talking about a little "eco bubble" car, we're talking about a fleet of family-size Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hybrid all-wheel-drive vehicles that can not only handle the terrain of our gravel roads, but can journey over 400km (petrol/electric) – more than sufficient for day-tripping the whole Island.

Through our multi-award winning 'Go Electric Initiative', Kangaroo Island is leading the way in sustainable tourism with the first PHEV-based car hire fleet in the world and possibly the largest regional electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Australia!

With charging points dotted all around the Island, you can either "refuel" over-night, or give your eco-friendly car a top-up charge whilst you grab a coffee or a bite to eat. You'll not only be doing your bit for the environment but electric vehicles go lightly on your travel budget too, offering great economy whilst expelling minimal emissions into our pristine environment.

Why are Electric HIRE CARS important to kangaroo island?

Kangaroo Island is committed to small-scale, sustainable tourism and has introduced many forward thinking policies and initiatives to preserve the Island's natural beauty. It is protected through conservation zoning, wildlife reserves and heritage listings. Why? Because the island’s residents are dedicated to keeping Kangaroo Island special. It's the same reasons visitors choose Kangaroo Island as a destination to visit.

The Kangaroo Island Council's 'Go Electric Initiative' is a key example of our community's commitment to ensuring its environmental credentials remain secure and protected for the future.

What is the 'Go Electric Initiative'?

Developed by Kangaroo Island Council in conjunction with funding provided by the South Australian State Government, the 'Go Electric Initiative' delivered 50KW of dual axis tracking solar power to the Kangaroo Island Airport, as well as 15KW of fixed panel solar at the Council’s main offices in late 2012.  A key element of this project was to install a network of Level 2 electric vehicle charging points in each of the main townships and at the Kingscote Airport to serve the first three electric vehicle’s leased into the project.

From here the Kangaroo Island Council commenced working in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors and Budget Car Hire Kangaroo Island, to provide the world’s first PHEV-based car hire fleet. There are currently five Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV all-wheel-drive vehicles available for visitors to hire when touring around Kangaroo Island on a self-drive holiday.

The Kangaroo Island Council is currently undertaking an $18 Million upgrade of its Airport facilities which will enable direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney. The availability of electric vehicles for hire, will play a key role in the development of future holiday packages.

Such packages would have the potential to offer carbon offset flights, access to low-emission vehicles and to stay in eco-accredited accommodation – providing another first for Kangaroo Island in our ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism.

The Council has also recently launched the 'Go Electric EV Friendly Business initiative' which encourages local accommodation / tourism businesses to offer vehicle recharging facilities for their guests. This will result in visitors being able to take full advantage of the hybrid vehicles' eco-friendly capability to reduce emission impact without relying on petrol.

You can plug in your hybrid (petrol/electric) vehicle in the main townships of Kingscote, Penneshaw, American River and Parndana, as well as the Kangaroo Island Airport located just south of Kingscote.

If needed, 24 hour petrol is available at Kingscote and Penneshaw. Fuel is also available from Parndana, Vivonne Bay, Island Beach and on our remote west end from the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, located just outside the main entrance to the Flinders Chase National Park.

Contact our Visitor Information Centre for free local advice about which accommodation providers will enable you to re-charge your "eco car" during your stay and the opening hours of our petrol stations and regional fuel stop locations.
