10 Great things to do this weekend on Kangaroo Island

Spring has sprung on Kangaroo Island and to celebrate there are lots of fantastic things to do over the long weekend. Here is a quick list of things to consider...

1. Kangaroo Island Spirit

KIS is pulling out all the goods this weekend with music and food, complementing their already fantastic array of experiences on offer.  Drop into the cellar door to try their extensive range of gins, spirits and liquors and then kick back and grab a bite to eat from pop up Mini Delights. All of this is coupled with chilled music every day of the long weekend.

2. Colour of Life Exhibition

This weekend will see Shep’s Studio present a vibrant exhibition with artwork and photography by Neil Sheppard (Shep), Jan Pengilly, Gloria Holden, Phillipa Holden and Sara Hourez. Located at Shep’s Studio in Wisanger the exhibition is open all weekend. Click here for more information about opening times, exact location and their fantastic Lucky Draw.

3. The Boat House Bazaar

The Rebuild the Independence will again have their long weekend Bazaar, so consider getting along to American River to score a bargain.  Books, furniture, bric a brac and souvenirs are all on offer.  The Rebuild the Independence is a non- profit organization and all funds raised go towards the rebuilding of the Independence. Open all weekend at the American River Wharf from 10.00am.  More information can be found here.

4. Islander Estate Tasting Room

The Islander Estate tasting room is excited to have Fish of Penneshaw / 2 Birds & A Squid Food Co @THAT VAN popping back up at the Tasting Room the long weekend. We recommend finding a spot on their lawn or deck, order a selection of Sue's fantastic dishes then head inside for a wine tasting while she works her magic. Then relax with lunch & your favourite drop in the sun. Weekend vibes indeed.

5. Favourite Things Exhibition

Artists' Collective Kangaroo Island members are putting out their Favourite Things in the Artworks Gallery's latest exhibition. Join the event by attending the opening on Sunday 30 September at 4.00pm, by The Islander journalist, Stan Gorton, musical accompaniment (including My Favourite Things) by The Coat-hangers, local musicians Doug Gray and Les Montanjees, and drinks and nibbles.

The exhibition features Peggy Rismiller's jewellery, Branks Gregor's colourful paintings, Antien Furstner's pottery, and beading and photography from new members and first-time exhibitors. The gallery is located on Bessel Drive in Baudin Beach.

6. Stokes Bay

A trip to Kangaroo Island is never complete without a visit to Stokes bay.  Situated on the glorious North Coast, it’s a winner. Meander through the cave like tunnel to reveal a beautiful rock pool and white sandy beach.  If you head there on Sunday over this long weekend, check out the Rock Pool Café or Table 88. The Rock pool offers honest, value for money quality beach side fare, while table 88 embraces local produce on their tapas style menu.

7. Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action

Want to try Something NEW! Then give fat tyred mountain bike tours a go this weekend.

Like a standard mountain bike, the only difference is the size of the tyres and according to the guys at Outdoor Action, the smile on your face!

These cool machines have very low pressure tyres, providing you with a cushioned ride over any lumps, stumps or bumps. They have 18 gears making pedaling effortless and tours can be adapted to you and your riding style. Expect to see native animals and other wildlife and enjoy your conversation with your local guide getting insider information on the best places to see and things to do during your stay.

Tours must be booked in advance, so if this seems like the adventure for you, check out the details here and book your fat bike tour.

8. Fire and Smoke

If you are looking for a great family restaurant, check out Fire and Smoke in Penneshaw.

They do dine in, takeaway and home delivery, awesome if you are staying around the Dudley Peninsula, when you first arrive on the island or even before you sadly must head on back to the mainland.  Their menu features Wood Oven Pizzas, Steak, Charcoal Grilled, Poultry, Schnitzels, Home Made Pastas, Desserts & More

9. The Kangaroo Island Sculpture trail

The Trail is set on 4.45 hectares of land overlooking the stunning Hog Bay, within the centre of the township of Penneshaw. This is Kangaroo Island latest addition to its extensive range of walking trails and it certainly is a beauty.  Recently opened to rave review, the trail is open every day and its FREE!

10. Flavours of Petite Provence
