About Tourism Kangaroo Island

Tourism Kangaroo Island (TKI) is an incorporated, non-profit, co-operative body that is responsible for marketing Kangaroo Island as a tourism destination. TKI is the coordinating and marketing body responsible for promoting the region to target markets. This involves the development of strategic advertising campaigns, public relations activities, involvement in consumer and trade shows, the development of consumer and trade collateral and the promotion of festivals and events. TKI is pivotal in management, leadership and the development of tourism on the Island.

The TKI Board works closely with the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), Local Government and industry to ensure the region is marketed in a consistent and effective manner. TKI members appoint representatives to a board at the Annual General Meeting while industry representatives from SATC, Kangaroo Island Council, Department for Environment and Heritage and Regional Development Australia make up a further 4 positions. The Board's responsibility is to guide and set the marketing activities of Tourism Kangaroo Island.

2010 / 2011 Board Members

PIERRE GREGOR  (CHAIRMAN)

Pierre has been involved with the Kangaroo Island Development Board for approximately seven years, with the past two and a half years as the Chief Executive Officer. He has had an association with the Island since 1975 and has been a resident since 2001 after a distinguished career as an Army officer, serving in Vietnam and the Middle East. Pierre strongly supports the tourism industry, sustainable development and economic well being on Kangaroo Island. Pierre is involved in the tourism industry and with his wife Branka runs Adagio B&B at Island Beach. He is a Member of the Institute of Company Directors and has significant involvement with KI community and agency committees including the TOMM committee and KI Strategic Tourism Plan committee and other community organisations such as the KI Country Education Fund, Legacy, Penneshaw Community Business Centre, Island Beach Ratepayers Association and has been involved in the organisation of a number of community events.

PETER WYATT (VICE CHAIRMAN)

Having spent 4 years as General Manager at the Kangaroo Island Lodge at American River, Peter has excellent knowledge of the tourism market on K.I. He is now operating K.I Transfers, a business he started after identifying a product gap in the market. Running this business has allowed him to interact closely with visitors to KI and get significant feedback on the expectations of a board cross section of visitors to the Island. Peter is also interacting with other Kangaroo Island operators on a daily basis.

JULIE-ANNE BRISCOE

Julie-Anne Briscoe has spent 30 years in the tourism and travel industry and is currently the Marketing Manager for the SeaLink Travel Group, based in Adelaide. Julie-Anne has been instrumental in her 17 years with SeaLink in helping to raise the profile of Kangaroo Island and the company SeaLink in the local, national and international markets. Prior to this she has worked for Compass Airlines, Adelaide Casino and Ansett Pioneer. Julie-Anne has been a Tourism KI Board Member since 2001.

LYN WHEATON

Proprietor of hosted bed and breakfast, Strenraer Homestead, Lyn has been a part of the Kangaroo Island community for more than forty years. Lyn's background as a secondary school teacher, specialising in science and home economics, and periods as a school and TAFE administrator has seen Lyn take a front-line role in Island education. Lyn's has been an advocate for the teaching of secondary and tertiary tourism and hospitality, recognising the need for a skilled local tourism workforce. Lyn and husband Graham opened Stranraer Homestead in 1998 after a four-year refurbishment.

ROBYN FIELD

Robyn owns and operates Kepals of Penneshaw, a self contained house in Penneshaw. She also runs her own photography business - Cove Creations - and Driftwood Gallery at the Dudley Wines Cellar Door in Penneshaw. Prior to coming to the Island, Robyn and her husband ran a successful small business in Adelaide. Robyn has served on the Tourism Kangaroo Island Board for the past two years.

GAIL SMITH

Gail has been managing her family business for the past 25 years and has been involved in the tourism industry for the past 5 years. She operates a B&B in Penneshaw, and is employed at The Gateway Visitor Information Centre. She has been employed there for the last four years as information officer, bookkeeper and as Visitor Centre Manager since late 2007. She attends to tourists and operators on a daily basis and enjoys people and tourism.

MARC WARREN

Marc arrived on Kangaroo Island in August 1996 and took up the position of Marketing Manager / Executive Officer for Tourism Kangaroo Island. After nearly 8 years of challenges (and a few rewards), Marc resigned in 2004. After a few months reflection, he acquired the Budget Rent A Car franchise and commenced operations in January 2005. Marc's other commitments and community involvement include Ambulance Officer (Team Leader) in Penneshaw; Presiding Member, KI Health Advisory Council (formerly KI Health Service Board); Tour Driver / Guide for SeaLink (casual / occasional) and a family business at Langhorne Creek.

SIMON WARD

Simon manages Vivonne Bay Eco-Adventures, which is a multi-faceted business incorporating food service, residential and educational tourism experiences and wildlife experiences such as the Birds of Prey display. The business is currently looking at incorporating the backpacker industry into its folio. Simon has worked in the industry for the last 12 years - 6 years each in the Northern Territory and Kangaroo Island.

ANDREW DUNCAN

Andrew is the General Manager of the Aurora Ozone Hotel in Kingscote. His previous experience in the industry includes time as a Board Manager of the Warrnambool Tourism Association, Castlemaine Tourism Association and Jabiru Business Association. He is a three time winner of the 'Certificate of Merit' at the Victorian Tourism Awards and multiple winner of industry awards in the Hotel / Motel industry.

ALEXANDER OUWENS

Alex has been involved in KI Tourism for 10 years since being a voluntary backpacker Tour guide at 22yo. More recently he sells unique & premium real estate on KI in addition to having launched his holiday accommodation site Club KI. Residing, on a monthly basis, alternatively on KI and on the mainland where he vigorously promotes KI. He sees and exciting future for an adventurous and sustainable tourism industry on KI.  

BRENTON DAVIS

Owner of Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action since November 2007. now consistently exceeding customer expectations and employing five staff running a professinal, growing and sustainable business. Prior tourism experience ranges from a Scuba Divemaster on Kangaroo Island in 1991 to Night Manager / Maintenance Supervisor of a backpacker hostel in the Netherlands during 2000/2001.

Staff

The South Australian Tourism Commission employs a Regional Tourism Manager and a Regional Tourism Coordinator for Kangaroo Island. Both are based on the Island and work closely with the board and the SATC to develop and implement marketing campaigns for the region.

Gateway Visitor Information Centre

Gateway Visitor Information Centre - Kangaroo Island, South AustraliaTourism Kangaroo Island own and manage Kangaroo Island's only accredited information centre, at Penneshaw. The Information Centre responds to visitor enquiry via telephone, email and in person. The Centre is open 7 days. 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday, closed Christmas Day.
