What’s on Kangaroo Island, Printing and Graphic Design

Simone Halloran comes from generations of islanders, and is a proud ongoing ambassador of Kangaroo Island. Simone is a visual and digital artist, professional photographer, graphic and web designer.

Having recently reached her goals of working for The Islander newspaper, and becoming an integral part of the Kangaroo Island Art Feast committee in 2013/14, Simone now has her own graphic and web design business based in Victor Harbor, Little Birdy Web & Design.
In discussions with Darry Fraser of KI Paperworks (a local printing business), a need for a reliable website showcasing KI events and businesses was discovered. "What's On Kangaroo Island" was born; a website that celebrates the island, and focusses on the needs of islanders and visitors alike.

What's On Kangaroo Island, Little Birdy Web & Design and KI Paperworks are proud to sponsor the KI FEASTival in 2014.

Margaret Fulton

Margaret Fulton began as a cooking teacher at the Overseas Corporation in 1947 & was partially responsible for the introduction of the pressure cooker to Australia.

In 1954, Margaret (then a 'home economist’ for a leading firm of cereal manufacturers) gave a talk on cooking with ready-to-eat cereals where she told the audience that “with more wives & mothers working; speed & ease in food preparation is a must”. This lead on to her playing a vital role in transforming the use of ready-prepared foods (like cereals, cake, pastry mixes, biscuit mixes, canned & frozen foods) in Australian homes.

From the 1960s & 1970s ‘The Margaret Fulton Cookbook’, was published & was an instant success. By 1978 it had sold 'more than two-thirds of a million copies'.

Margaret’s encouragement of Chinese cuisine was recognised as a contributor to the development of Sydney's Chinatown district where 'few non-Chinese' ventured 'before the 1950s'. More recently Margaret was added to the list of ‘100 Australian Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia’ & in 2006 ‘The Bulletin’ named Fulton in their list of 'The 100 most influential Australians'.

FEASTival is honoured to have Margaret Fulton share a part of her amazing life as part of the Garden Party Event & judge of the Tourism Kangaroo Island Signature Dish Competition at FEAST KI Big Day Out.

Kate Sumner

The FEASTival is very proud to have Kate Sumner from Kangaroo Island Source as our Food & Wine ambassador for 2014 & presenting her Masterclass 'hands-on' Event. Kate is passionate about the island, its people & its food & beverage production. A fantastic chef in her own right, Kate brings great sensitivity, great ideas & energy to the FEASTival team.

After returning to Australia from London, Kate Sumner fell in love with the pristine natural environment of Kangaroo Island & developed a vision to create a food business that connected people with the clearest, cleanest, most natural expression of the Kangaroo Island region.

By staying true to this vision Kate has earned herself a reputation as Kangaroo Island’s most produce driven chef. In addition to building her own successful business, Kangaroo Island Source, Kate was the driving force behind the establishment of the growing Kangaroo Island Farmers Market & has been a mainstay in the Good Food Kangaroo Island group for many years. She also recently developed a Kangaroo Island honey & fig ice-cream for Peters Ice-cream, & is working on developing some new product lines with other companies.

Today Kate’s Kangaroo Island Source continues to bloom, specialising in gourmet food production, catering & a cooking school which focuses entirely on sourcing the best regional produce, treating it simply but respectfully & presenting it in a way that retains a unique ‘sense of place’ providing a taste of the truly natural character of Kangaroo Island.

Tim Bourke

Southern Ocean Lodge Executive Chef, Tim Bourke is passionate about using local, seasonally fresh ingredients in each daily-changing menu, an approach that is central to the Baillie Lodges dining experience. Tim spent time in the sun at sister property Capella Lodge, where he developed a light European style of dining best suited to the island’s climate and driven by a plentiful supply of fresh local produce.

Tim was then excited to head up the kitchen team at the newly opened Southern Ocean Lodge

Working closely with lodge owner James Baillie, Tim developed the culinary philosophy, designed to offer guests a sense of place in their dining experience at Southern Ocean Lodge. This ‘locavore’ approach to wining and dining means that all food and beverage ingredients are fresh and in peak season, and sourced from local suppliers from both Kangaroo Island & South Australia.

Tim brings to the table a menu that is at once sophisticated and simple, designed to honour the flavours of each ingredient. Tim continues to source and develop mutually beneficial working relationships with local artisan producers, who often operate on a small scale, sustainable and organic basis. His aim is to establish Southern Ocean Lodge as the region’s premier food and beverage destination.

Tim will be hosting the supporting event to Tasting Australia; Pollen-Ate.
