 Take a trail to surprising places on wild and welcoming Kangaroo Island where you can taste the unexpected and wondrous in food and wine. The Kangaroo Island Farm Gate and Cellar Door Trail introduces you to producers and products at their source. It invites you to enjoy the rich fruits of Kangaroo Island producers' labours in your own time in a natural unspoilt environment.

Farm gate and cellar door locations are listed separately and alphabetically. Each has its own specialities and personality. 

The three listed itineraries cover three areas, each about a day's drive (but you're welcome to take two). The Dudley Peninsula, Central and South Coast, and Kingscote and surrounds trails are a suggested guide to a variety of sensations and connections with locals.

Choose your own, guided by the listed farm gate and cellar door venues, and mix in a splash of art, scenery and natural delights.

The lack of large-scale development has meant that small industry has flourished and now includes a variety of products such as free-range eggs, olive oil, native jams, smoked fish, sauces and marinades.

Kangaroo Island's apiarists harvest honey from the pure strain Ligurian bees, and regional cheeses and yoghurts continue to find a place in food lovers' hearts. Andermel Marron 

Don't miss this threefold opportunity for magnificent marron (freshwater crayfish), wine tastings/sales and café dining. Ferguson Australia 

A brand synonymous with Kangaroo Island. View live lobster and amazing King Crabs in the working depots' holding and feeding tanks. Purchase Ferguson's gourmet lobster range including lobster medallions and lobster oil. Island Beehive 

Visit one of Australia's largest organic honey producers, an apiary industry showcase for Kangaroo Island's world renowned Ligurian Bee. Enjoy free tastings of their award-winning honey, view bees in the glass hive and take a guided factory tour. Shop for local art, homemade honeycomb ice cream and a wide range of quality souvenirs or just relax with a coffee in the café.

Island Pure Sheep Dairy 

A dairy with a difference. Take part in a guided tour and observe the milking of sheep and the making of this famous cheese and yoghurt. Wines & Vines

 Vines were grown on Kangaroo Island as long ago as 1837, but it was 2001 when Australia's newest wine region was declared.  

  Today, there are 30 growers and around 200 hectares of vines. Visitors can choose from 18 home-grown labels, five of which are being exported to the UK, USA, Europe and Asia. Tastings? Of course - but prepare to indulge your eyes as well as your palate, with several cellar doors and restaurants enjoying remarkable views. And if you've got questions about the wine or winemaking, good news: there's every chance the winemaker is somewhere nearby.

Bay Of Shoals Wines 

Featuring an intimate cellar door, vineyards to the water's edge and outstanding panoramic views, Bay of Shoals Winery is the ideal setting for a memorable wine tasting experience. The winery incorporates pelican and maritime themes throughout and provides tastings of Island wine in its popular pelican glasses. Located just a short drive from historic Reeves Point.

Chapman River Cellar Door 

Set in an old tin aircraft hangar, behind the sand dunes at Antechamber Bay, the Chapman River Cellar Door and Art Studio has been a labour of love for Bruce and Diana Keir. Eccentric, welcoming and thoroughly charming there's free tastings of Happiness Wines - from the four acre vineyard just up the hill - delicious platters, cakes and espresso coffee. Relax and enjoy the Chapman River Cellar Door experience - and if you bring the kids, there's a great playground to keep them busy! 

Dudley Cellar Door 

Dudley Wines is Kangaroo Island’s Pioneer Winery. Go and taste their handcrafted wines at their Clifftop Cellar Door, situated on KI's stunning North Coast and only 12km from Penneshaw. From Fun Bubbly's to Earthy Reds, taste their whole range of locally grown and produced award-winning wines. False Cape Wines 

False Cape established their vineyard on the Dudley Peninsula in 1999 and have been consistently producing quality whites and reds ever since. Although widely available around the Island, False Cape has their home at The Penneshaw Hotel. Islander Estate Vineyards

Kangaroo Island Spirits 

South Australia's first and only boutique distillery. All products are handmade in small batches using hand crafted copper pot stills. The range includes a honey and walnut liqueur, anisette, and a strawberry and vanilla liqueur. Visit the intimate cellar door for a tasting or an espresso coffee.

Rookery Wines produce small quantities of their range with a focus on ensuring the highest quality in every bottle. This small, family-owned winery consistently receive top reviews for their wines and have won awards at wine shows Australia-wide. Rookery Wines have their cellar door outlet at Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery where visitors can taste and purchase their diverse range of wines.

Sunset Winery 

Ideally located on the main road, just 6kms west of Penneshaw, Sunset offers visitors stunning elevated 180-degree sea views of Eastern Cove and beyond. Enjoy a complimentary wine tasting or relax on the outdoor deck with a glass of wine and a savoury platter featuring local cheese and regional produce. Coffee and muffins are available for purchase, as is a range of local produce and art.
